Make sure you make an effort to connect with a student personally before launching into the material for the day. It’s especially important to engage on this more informal level with online instruction, when being on a screen can, in some ways, be more impersonal. Ask how their day was, what they’re doing with their time in isolation, how they feel about the current situation, what life is like with their siblings. If you get one word responses, that only confirms you’re speaking with a teenager… keep going!
